At Sakana AI, we are conducting world-leading research and development with our unique generative AI technology inspired by nature. The Product team’s mission is to bring these cutting-edge research results to the world as AI products. We are seeking an Applied Research Engineer to advance this mission, working across research and development of the core AI technologies behind our AI products, model training, evaluation, and improvement, and product development spanning UI/UX, backend, and infrastructure.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Deliver innovative solutions to customers using state-of-the-art AI technologies
- Develop a deep understanding of the customer’s domain, define a path to solving their problems, and work directly with them
- Define requirements and propose technical approaches for tackling ambiguous problems in a rapidly evolving technical landscape
- Research and develop highly impactful AI technologies that sit at the heart of our products
- Train, evaluate, and improve LLMs using our data assets, and accumulate and share the resulting knowledge within the company
- Explore the productization of Sakana AI’s research, technologies, and solutions
- Collaborate within a global team working in both Japanese and English
Qualifications and Skills
- Hands-on experience with generative AI technologies such as LLMs and AI agents
- Specifically, knowledge, experience, or interest in several of the following:
- Building AI agent workflows and multi-agent systems
- Developing foundational AI agent technologies such as Deep Research and Computer Use
- Building tools around AI agents, such as function calling, MCP, and A2A
- Building RAG systems and search engines
- Document understanding involving images, using VLMs and OCR
- Practical and safe AI operation, including hallucination countermeasures such as fact-checking, citation, and guardrails
- Building task-specific and domain-specific benchmarks and continuously evaluating and improving against them
- Research and development of self-improving systems such as meta agents
- Developing open-ended exploration using AI agents
- Designing, training, evaluating, and improving models using reinforcement learning and supervised/unsupervised learning
- Experience across the full data science process, from problem definition and data analysis to feature engineering, model implementation, and value validation
- Practical know-how in using AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Devin, and Claude Code
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, machine learning, or a related field. A degree in physics, mathematics, business, economics, or law is a plus.

- LLMやAIエージェントのような生成AI技術の使用経験があること
- 具体的には、以下のスキルに対する複数の知識や経験・興味

- 課題設定からデータ分析、特徴量エンジニアリング、モデル実装、価値検証まで、データサイエンスのプロセス全体にまたがる経験
- GitHub Copilot・Cursor・Devin・Claude CodeなどのAI支援コーディングツールの運用ノウハウ
- コンピューターサイエンス、機械学習または関連分野の学士号または修士号。物理学、数学、経営学、経済学、法学の学位をお持ちであれば尚可。
