At present, we are seeing a record amount of capital pouring into AI compute at a rate which may not be sustainable, funding AI businesses without a clear path to profitability, and consuming unprecedented levels of energy, to develop AI models under the assumption of near limitless resources.

But is this really the future that we want to build? As an AI R&D company in Tokyo, we also question whether this is the right approach for Japan, a nation with limited resources, to build its Sovereign AI.

We believe that intelligent life has arisen not from an abundance of resources but rather from the lack of it. Nature ultimately selects systems that are able to do more with less. It is debatable whether such constraints are a requirement for intelligence to emerge, but it is undeniable that our own intelligence is a result of resource constraints.


There are multiple ways to build bridges. There are also multiple ways to build AI technology.

Sakana AI has always done things differently. Since the beginning, our research has focused on developing efficient AI technology sustainably. For instance, rather than reinventing the wheel by training yet another large foundation model from scratch, we instead pioneered ways of using evolution to combine existing open-source models, using tree search to combine closed models, getting models to self-improve, to push the frontier of AI capabilities.

Last year, we also pioneered the use of LLM agents to automate AI science, enabling more efficient algorithms to be discovered by AI itself. We developed energy efficient language models that work on edge devices, and we are also working on entirely new AI architectures which may carry us into a vastly more efficient AI paradigm.

We also created our business model with sustainability and profitability in mind. This year, we built a healthy and growing enterprise AI business, where we have partnered with some of the largest enterprises in Japan to deploy AI-enabled business applications that can truly bring return on investment to our clients with our technology.

For Japan, with a declining workforce and an aging population, the benefits of AI technology are clear. We believe the right path for Japan, a nation with limited resources, is to develop our AI ecosystem sustainably through innovation and collaboration, with a strong focus on societal implementation of the technology.


We Raised 20 Billion Yen to Build Sustainable AI in Japan

Sakana AI’s mission is to develop AI solutions for Japan’s needs, and democratize AI in Japan. While we have made much progress this year, there is much more to do. Which is why we are proud to announce that we have raised 20 Billion Yen (135 million US Dollars) for our Series B to accelerate our mission: To develop AI sustainably and implement AI that benefits Japan.

Progress to Date and What’s Next

Since our establishment about two years ago, we have achieved key milestones in both frontier AI research (R&D) and Applied AI.

1. Open-Ended Frontier AI Research (R&D)

2. Business/Government Implementation in Japan (Applied AI)

We are scaling collaborations with leading Japanese companies, including strategic partnerships with MUFG and Daiwa Securities Group to develop custom AI for finance.

In this process, we have recognized a significant gap between general-purpose models and the tacit, uncodified knowledge required for professional applications. Bridging this requires deep, domain-specific engineering. We are now expanding our focus from finance to include the defense, intelligence and manufacturing sectors.

3. Sovereign AI

We see a strong global demand for Sovereign AI, tailored to national cultures and values. We also believe that the focus for Japan’s model development should be in post-training, and we are focusing R&D on this layer. This allows us to sustainably develop and optimize frontier models for Japan’s specific needs, offering a distinct path and resource requirement from the large-scale model competition.

Sakana AIは、シリーズBラウンドにおいて、総額約200億円（1億3,500万米ドル）の資金調達を実施しました。これにより、当社のPost-money Valuation（資金調達後企業価値）は約4,000億円（26億3,500万米ドル）に、累計調達額は総額約520億円（3億4,700万米ドル）になります。




1. 「効率的な」独自モデルの開発へ

現在、世界では大量の計算資源を投入したAIモデルの開発競争が激化していますが、その巨額のコストに見合う経済的リターンや社会での活用の道筋はまだ明確ではありません。また、米中に比べて後発の日本が計算資源への投資額で競うのは現実的でもありません。そこでSakana AIは、こうした潮流とは一線を画し、大量の計算資源に依存しない持続可能なAI開発とその社会実装を目指しています。

今回調達した資金は、その取り組みを次の段階へ進めるため、以下の分野に重点投資します。

  1. 日本市場に最適化された基盤モデル開発：
    • 日本の文化的・言語的特性や個別の産業ニーズに即するとともに、コスト的にも効率的な方法で、基盤モデルの開発を進めます。
    • 引き続き、「集合知」や「自己進化」など、自然界に着想を得た基礎研究を推進するとともに、ソブリンAIの鍵となる事後学習技術の開発に集中的な投資を行います。
  2. 日本のあらゆる産業を対象に：
    • これまで重点的に取り組んできた金融分野に加え、新たに、防衛や製造業といった日本の基幹産業におけるAIの社会実装を強力に推進します。
    • 技術と事業の基盤拡大のため、戦略的投資・パートナーシップ・M&Aを積極的に進めます。
  3. グローバル展開：
    • 当社は「世界最先端のAI技術を日本で社会実装する」という使命のもと、日本の産業界と連携して産業の強化と国際競争力の向上に取り組みます。今後、海外顧客へのサービスの提供を含むグローバル展開を加速します。

これまでの進捗とこれからの取組み

Sakana AIは、設立から約2年で、研究開発（R&D）と社会実装（Applied）の両面で下記のようなマイルストーンを達成してきました。

1. オープンエンドな研究開発

AIの次世代のパラダイムを切り開くため、ワールドクラスの研究者を東京に集め、既存の発想にとらわれない基礎研究を推進。以下のような研究成果を公開しました。

2. 日本における社会実装

研究成果を社会に還元するため事業開発本部（Applied Team）を立ち上げ、日本を代表する企業との連携を本格化させています。2025年には、三菱UFJフィナンシャル・グループ（MUFG）様や大和証券グループ様との戦略的パートナーシップを発表し、金融という高度な専門領域におけるカスタムAIの開発に着手しました。

この社会実装の過程で、私たちは汎用的なAIモデルと、実際の業務アプリケーションの間に存在するギャップを強く認識しています。汎用モデルは一般的なタスクをこなせても、プロフェッショナルの業務に不可欠な、言語化されていない「暗黙知」を扱うことができません。この谷を埋めるには、AIモデルを構築できるレベルの高度な技術力を持つエンジニアが、特定の領域に深く、狭くコミットし、業務プロセス自体をAIと共に設計していくアプローチが不可欠です。

現在は金融分野での取り組みに加え、防衛・インテリジェンス分野での取り組みを加速させています。2025年6月に採択された総務省との「インターネット上の偽・誤情報等への対策技術の開発・実証事業」のほか、様々な取組みを進めています。また、今後は、製造業などを念頭に、金融に続く第二、第三のビジネス領域への展開も進めていきます。

3. ソブリンAIへの挑戦

さらに、私たちは国内外のパートナーと対話する中で、各国が自国の文化や価値観に基づいたAIを求める「ソブリンAI」への強い希求を感じています。現在AI開発の主戦場は、大量のデータをモデルに与える「事前学習」から、既存の高性能モデルを特定の目的に合わせて最適化する「事後学習（Post-training）」のレイヤーへ移行しています。

こうした背景から、私たちは、フロンティアモデルの高い性能を維持しつつ、日本独自の文化的背景や社会規範に最適化されたモデルを構築するための研究開発にも着手しています。この事後学習パラダイムによるアプローチは、米中2強の巨大モデル開発競争とは異なる、日本が技術開発力を発揮し、本当に意味のあるAIを構築するための重要な一歩となると考えています。
