We received a supercomputing grant from the Japanese government

We’re happy to announce that Sakana AI is one of seven institutions in Japan chosen by the Japanese government to receive a supercomputing grant, for encouraging development of foundation AI models to strengthen the capabilities of Japan’s generative AI ecosystem.

This grant, known as the Generative AI Accelerator Challenge (GENIAC), is organized by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization), which is under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). They have been soliciting applications since last year for R&D proposals that will strengthen Japan’s technical infrastructure in the post-5G telecommunication systems era. The grant will provide the seven chosen institutions access to a supercomputing cluster equipped with the latest GPUs capable of training the latest foundation models, for several months in 2024.

We have many exciting projects we are currently working on, and we’re still operating more on the “GPU Poor” side of things, but with this additional compute capacity, we’re now really excited to use this new GPU cluster for scaling up and developing our core ideas about nature-inspired AI models in Japan!
