日本語を、もっと深く翻訳する
Sakana Namazuは、日本語と、その背景にある文化や文脈の理解を重視して開発してきたモデルシリーズです。今回のアップデートでは、ベースモデルの刷新と学習手法の改善により、Sakana Translateが掲げる「日本語を、深く翻訳する」というコンセプトをさらに深化させました。例えば、下記の日英翻訳の例では、「お宮参り」という日本独特の文化背景をもつ表現に対して、Sakana Translateはその意味を汲み取り、他社モデルと比べても自然な英語に翻訳できています。

Sakana Translateの翻訳品質を定量的に評価するために、Sakana AIが開発した「TransEvalnia」を用いた評価を実施しました。TransEvalniaは、訳語の適切さや自然さなど複数の観点からどの翻訳文が優れているかを判定できる手法です。
今回は、独自に用意した日英翻訳タスク（160件）について、Sakana Translateと他社の翻訳モデルと1対1で比較しました。下図に示す通り、すべての比較対象との比較において、Sakana Translateの出力がより優れていると判定された割合は50%を上回りました。

日本特有の表現や文化的背景を含む文章では、モデルの規模が大きく、汎用的な性能が高いほど良い翻訳になるとは限りません。訳文の質を左右するのは、日本語の文脈と、その背景にある文化への理解の深さです。今回の結果は、私たちが開発した事後学習手法によって日本語の文化的・言語的なニュアンスを捉える能力を高めることが、翻訳品質の向上に有効であることを示唆しています。

- 添削：入力した文章を、より自然で適切な表現に整えるモードです。変更箇所を差分ハイライトで表示し、文法の誤りだけでなく、自然さ・丁寧さ・トーン・相手との距離感まで整えます。
- 質疑：翻訳・添削結果についてその場で追加質問ができます。ニュアンスの確認、別の表現の提案、文法や語彙選択の解説など、同じ文脈のまま理解を深められます。
いずれも追加の操作は不要で、今回のアップデート以降は新しいモデルで動作します。

Sakana Translate Now Runs on the New Generation of Sakana Namazu
Today we updated the translation model behind Sakana Translate. It now runs on the new generation of Sakana Namazu, which we recently released via API and on Sakana Chat. The service continues to offer bidirectional translation between Japanese, English, and Chinese, now with more natural translations. It remains free for everyone.

Translating Japanese, Even More Deeply
Sakana Namazu is a model series developed with a strong emphasis on understanding the Japanese language and the culture and context behind it. In this update, a refreshed base model and improved training methods take Sakana Translate’s concept of “translating Japanese, deeply” a step further. In the Japanese-to-English example below, Sakana Translate grasps the meaning of “Omiyamairi” (a newborn’s first shrine visit), an expression rooted in a uniquely Japanese cultural tradition, and renders it into more natural English than other models.

To quantitatively evaluate Sakana Translate’s translation quality, we ran evaluations using TransEvalnia, an evaluation method developed by Sakana AI. TransEvalnia judges which of two translations is better from multiple perspectives, such as the appropriateness of word choice and naturalness.
Using an in-house set of 160 Japanese-to-English translation tasks, we compared Sakana Translate head-to-head against other translation models and judged which produced the better translation. As shown below, Sakana Translate’s output was judged the better translation more than 50% of the time against every system we compared with.

For text containing uniquely Japanese expressions and cultural backgrounds, a larger, more capable general-purpose model does not necessarily produce a better translation. What determines translation quality is how deeply the model understands the Japanese language and the culture behind it. These results suggest that strengthening a model’s ability to capture the cultural and linguistic nuances of Japanese through our post-training method is an effective way to improve translation quality.
The Same Three Features
- Translate: Drop in a long text and translate it in one go. It handles up to roughly 5,000 characters, and the translation appears in real time as it is generated.
- Proofread: Polishes your text into more natural, appropriate phrasing. Changes are shown as highlighted diffs, covering not just grammar but naturalness, politeness, tone, and register.
- Ask: Ask follow-up questions about a translation or proofread on the spot, such as checking nuances, requesting alternative phrasings, or getting explanations of grammar and word choice, all within the same context.
No extra steps are needed; from this update onward, all three features run on the new model.
